Collier's Powerful Welsh Cheddar takes gold at International Cheese Awards

Collier’s Powerful Welsh Cheddar has been named ‘Best Extra Mature Cheese Manufactured in the UK’ at the International Cheese Awards at Nantwich.

The award comes as Fayrefield Foods - which produces Collier’s - unveiled its flagship cheese’s brand new look at the world’s largest cheese show where competition was fierce with 2,761 competitors from 24 countries pitted against each other in 160 competition classes.

Collier's Powerful Welsh Cheddar "We are thrilled that Collier’s Powerful Welsh Cheddar has been recognised as the Best Extra Mature Cheddar in the UK," says Chris Swire, Collier's Powerful Welsh Cheddar marketing director.
"But we are not surprised that the judges were so impressed - Collier's distinctive flavour has won a legion of fans and this latest award is richly deserved."

In its distinctive black packaging, Collier’s Powerful Welsh Cheddar looks like no ordinary cheese.

The Collier’s name came from Wales’ proud industrial history and Collier’s characteristics reflect those of the coal miner: reliability, power and integrity, and was named Best Welsh Cheese at last year’s International Cheese Awards.

Collier’s is an uniquely ‘powerful’ cheddar with a long, deep character and savoury, yet slightly sweet taste. Unusually, it contains tantalising “crunchy bits” which are actually calcium lactate grains that develop during maturation and are evidence of the cheese’s high quality.

Launched in 2002, Collier’s is manufctured in Wales  but the recipe is a closely guarded secret. It is matured for up to 20 months and is regularly and carefully graded throughout its development, until it attains the unique taste and texture that defines Collier’s Powerful Welsh Cheddar.

It has won a multitude of fans, many of whom post rave reviews on the website www.collierscheese.com and is available from Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda, Co Op, Morrisons, Waitrose, Spar and Booths.

Collier’s is also available ready grated, and now has a sister product, Collier’s Welsh Valleys Butter, made from freshly churned Carmarthenshire cream with two per cent sea salt which gives a rich, creamy, full flavour without a higher salt content. It’s unique and dramatic taste makes it a versatile ingredient in a wide range of family recipes.

The show also saw the launch of a whole new look for Collier’s. The new packaging will be in stores later this summer, which, while keeping the strength and character of the collier identity, introduces a fresh, modern look which signals the quality and taste that Collier’s is famous for.

While during the show at the Collier’s Bistro Live Café TV chef and Collier’s brand ambassador Matt Tebbutt along with actor Sean Wilson - better known as Coronation Street’s Martin Platt - demonstrated a range of mouth-watering recipes.

Both Matt and Sean, who has turned his hand to cheesemaking, were judges are at this year’s event, and their live cooking demonstrations were a big draw for the 30,000 visitors.
