Collier's Powerful Welsh Cheddar is the best cheese in Wales
Collier’s Powerful Welsh Cheddar has been crowned Best Welsh Cheese today (July 27th) at the International Cheese Awards at Nantwich, the world’s largest cheese show.
The award comes as Collier’s unveiled its new brand ambassador, cricket legend and star of Strictly Come Dancing, Darren Gough.
Competition at the show was fierce with 3,230 cheeses across 300 categories from 24 countries pitted against each other.
Darren Gough adores Collier’s and hosted the spectacular Collier’s Cricket Pavilion Bistro at the show, which attracts 30,000 visitors each year.
As well as a successful career in international cricket he won an army of new fans when he won Strictly Come Dancing in 2005, and now presents the drivetime show on Talk Sport radio.
Darren will head a sales push for Wales’ most popular branded cheddar, heading sales promotions and featuring in PR and social media campaigns.
"I’m thrilled to bits that Collier’s Powerful Welsh Cheddar has won Best Welsh Cheese, " says Darren.
"I am not surprised though - Collier's has such a distinctive sweet and savoury flavour and I absolutely love it. It has a cracking taste and I love the little crystals of salt that form in it when it’s really mature giving it a nice crunch. I’ve got all my family and friends eating it now!”
In its distinctive black packaging, Collier’s Powerful Welsh Cheddar looks like no ordinary cheese.
The Collier’s name came from Wales’ proud industrial history and Collier’s characteristics reflect those of the coal miner: reliability, power and integrity, and was named Best Extra Mature Cheddar at last year’s International Cheese Awards.
Collier’s is an uniquely ‘powerful’ cheddar with a long, deep character and savoury, yet slightly sweet taste. Unusually, it contains tantalising “crunchy bits” which are actually calcium lactate grains that develop during maturation and are evidence of the cheese’s high quality.
Launched in 2002, Collier’s is made in North Wales but the recipe is a closely guarded secret. It is matured for up to 20 months and is regularly and carefully graded throughout its development, until it attains the unique taste and texture that defines Collier’s Powerful Welsh Cheddar.
It has won a multitude of fans, many of whom post rave reviews on the website www.collierscheese.com and is available from Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda, Co Op, Morrisons, Waitrose, Spar and Booths.
Collier’s is also available ready grated, and has a sister product, Collier’s Welsh Valleys Butter, made from freshly churned cream with two per cent sea salt which gives a rich, creamy, full flavour without a higher salt content. It’s unique and dramatic taste makes it a versatile ingredient in a wide range of family recipes.
